TAROTSCOPES for the week of 04/30/15

WELCOME TRAVELERS!

I apologize for the delay and for how brief this post is this week!  I'm traveling and having technical difficulties, perhaps related to Mercury joining Venus in Gemini and also orbiting out of bounds.  Communications may be a little haywire for the next few weeks while Gemini explores the area outside the sun's jurisdiction.  This is a big week astrologically speaking.  I feel like I’ve said that a lot lately and this week could be less intense than preceding weeks (i.e. the Eclipses), but you may notice, as I did, that I pulled several Major Arcana cards.  Major Arcana (for those of you new to tarot) are like the royal family of the tarot card deck.  When a Major Arcana surfaces in a reading it often indicates a significant turning point in the recipient’s life, decisions or life transitions which carry more weight.  The Full Moon in Scorpio this weekend is known as the Buddha Moon because it is the moon under which Buddha was said to have reached enlightenment.  I will discuss this moon in further detail under the card for the week 5 OF SWORDS.

5 OF SWORDS

Recently a friend and I were discussing the personality of numbers.  About five I joked, “5 is a bully, 5 will steal your milk money.”  The 5 of Swords is often said to point quite literally to a conflict or fight.  At the Full Moon in Scorpio this struggle is likely to be more internal.  Pluto- Scorpio’s ruling planet, is currently retrograde, directing Pluto’s themes of transformation, power, intimacy and sexuality inwards.  As I mentioned above, this Full Moon is also known as the Buddha Moon.  Every year at this time Buddhists celebrate a holiday known as, Uposatha.  According to the Wikipedia article on this holiday, Buddha taught that this day is for “the cleansing of the defiled mind.”  When I read this I thought, “Buddha, said that?  Sounds kind of puritanical.”  In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with your mind (even if it is defiled), but I think it is healthy to change it when you find it becoming rigid, inflexible or judgmental.  The 5 of Swords at the Buddha Moon asks us to think about what we are holding on to, what mental traps our minds may have fallen into which could be preventing our individual as well as collective evolution.

THEME

This weeks Tarotscopes were written on an airplane called Desire in collaboration with my seat mate, Nora, a Gemini and creator of Waggy Tees!  Nora made 12 portraits of 12 women (some of them self-portraits).  We discussed each portrait trying to determine which woman corresponded with which sign and card.  We discovered that much of the message was held in each woman's gaze.  (I will attempt to upload the photos of the portraits, but I am traveling in New York currently and my technology is a little limited.)

WELCOME NAVIGATORS OF THE ASTRAL PLANE

There is a cacophony among the planets and stars right now making it difficult to determine which aspects will be most important or influential.  It may depend a great deal on your individual natal astrology.  I discuss the astrological influences more under the Theme and the card for the week, the 7 OF CUPS!

7 OF CUPS

Every morning at 7:55 am the middle school across the street sounds a recording of a trumpet playing Reveille.  I find myself naturally waking up at around 7:30 am these days, but it is the sound of the trumpet that propels me out of bed.  The other day with my head still pressed to the pillow, I felt a pang of guilt listening to Reveille and thinking about the middle schoolers, already stiff in their uniforms, sitting in plastic chairs, drumming pencils on table tops, waiting for the morning announcements to crackle out of the speakers.  From where I am I can hear these announcements too, but not distinctly.  I can plug any words I want into the sound of the woman’s sentences.  Sometimes I imagine she is reading me my own to-do list for the day.
The card I’ve pulled for all of us this week, the 7 of Cups, is about possibility and choices.  It may be embodied by the disembodied voice I hear every morning following Reveille.  At this point in my life, at this distance, I have to decide what is important, what to prioritize.  In Anne Ortelee’s Weekly Weather podcast she listed off an overwhelming number of astrological configurations forming this week, “4 Yods, 2 Hammers of Thor, 2 Grand Trines, one Star of David,” etc.  What takes priority, or precedence in your life is likely up to you (and also depends on your natal astrology).  Anne Ortelee suggested that this is a week to finish old projects, to wrap things up before you begin anything new.  What items would you plug into your own personal morning announcements?
In high school I visited a good friend in Colorado.  Her family lived in what I perceived to be a mansion provided by the Japanese embassy her father worked for.  I remember the main hallway was an endless row of identical mauve-colored floor-to-ceiling doors.  I had to count to remember which one was my friend’s bedroom.  At the time of my visit, she hadn’t been living there very long, so even she couldn’t tell me what was behind all of the doors.  My memory of this house feels like a dream and there is a dreamy quality to the 7 of Cups as well.  When presented with so many options which appear, on the surface, quite similar, it is easy to get lost.  Part of the challenge of the 7 of Cups is clearing the fog created by so many options.  Anne Ortelee frequently asks listeners, “What is your dream? Focus on the dream.”  If you aren’t sure what is ultimately important to you, consider what is most important to you right now and move from there.
In the traditional Rider-Waite tarot deck the 7 of Cups depicts a man standing before a cloud displaying seven cups holding seven different items, each one enticing in its own way, but each also with a warning attached: choose wisely.  The 7 of Cups and the current astrological sky, thick with Taurus (Venus-ruled) planets and planets answering to Venus in Gemini, asks us to move from unconscious desire to conscious desire, from anything could happen to something is going to happen.
(Viagem Au Fundo De Mim- Rita Lee)

THE THEME

Venus is out of bounds.  What this means literally, in the simplest terms, is that the planet has stepped out of the sun’s orbit/ path.  What this means for us here on earth is erratic behavior particularly in the areas of life Venus represents: love, money, beauty.  Remember the astronaut who wore space diapers to save time driving from Houston to Orlando in order to kidnap her ex-lover’s new girlfriend?  Perhaps Venus was out of bounds that day or maybe Venus was out of bounds in the astronaut’s birth chart, in any case more of these kinds of stories could surface during this time.  In honor of Venus stepping out of her comfort zone this week, I step out of mine and into some mush with the theme…love poems (or parts of them anyway)!  Enjoy!

XV THE DEVIL

This week, Pluto in Capricorn stations to go retrograde putting the emphasis of transformation and overhaul on internal and emotional structures.  Recently, my mind has been wandering into old haunts.  The other day I flashed on the basement of an old burger joint where I used to work when I was seventeen.  It was more than a flash actually, it lingered long enough to allow me to explore the rooms, to mentally meander from front to back, past the toilets I was always afraid to use.  In the dream dictionary I check periodically, following particularly vivid dreams, it says that physical structures from childhood have a deep emotional significance and often reveal old patterns or emotions a situation in your waking life may be triggering.  This job, my first, the first time I had a boss and a pay check and a punch card with my name on it, is reflective of the sorts of structures and systems of power symbolized by the XV Devil, the card I pulled for all of us this week.
The Devil is linked with the planet Saturn and the sign of Capricorn (I’m having deja vu, I must have also said this before, but like the first chapter of every book in the Babysitters Club series, it bears repeating).  Saturn and Capricorn are associated with the bones, a frame which holds the shape of something or gives it integrity.  Time falls under the jurisdiction of Saturn and Capricorn, as a structure and system of organization.  The Devil also brings to light our “demons,” the areas of our life where we give up our personal power or agency.  What I think I was revisiting in that burger joint basement was a moment of crystallization, the moment I resolved to quit.  I was afraid of the basement, everyone was, because it was haunted, likely by more than one ghost.  Because I was the youngest and the dishwasher it was always me who was made messenger, sent down into the underworld of burger joint’s basement.  The stakes weren’t very high back then, I was still living with my parents, so technically I didn’t need the job, but I reveled in the idea of making my own money.  Eventually, I thought, when I was promoted to server, I would be able to support myself on what I would make in tips.  Everyday it became clearer that I would not be promoted, they needed me to deliver things to and from the basement, to do all the things that made everyone else uneasy.  On what would be my last trip to the basement I felt a switch flip.  My fears were quelled by a greater sense of certainty and an understanding of my power to change my situation.  This is my own example.  I understand of course, that some people don’t have luxury of being able to quit their job on a whim or even a sense of resolve.  But everyone has an area of their life where this kind of scenario may play out, a place where you can reclaim your own strength, power and integrity by acknowledging your deepest (Pluto is the underworld after all) desires.
As Pluto’s attention moves from external forms of power and abuse to more covert forms, you may feel something shift internally, a desire to change your emotional standpoint.  Perhaps the decisions you’ve made have been based on an internal emotional framework which is no longer supportive of the life you want to live or a new set of goals that may have formulated around the Uranus-Pluto square which recently made its final exact aspect.  I’m pretty sure this is a quote I read somewhere, or maybe I just overheard someone say it: “The hardest thing to change is your mind” and maybe another quote is, “You change your mind, you change your life.”
Additionally, there will be a New Moon on Saturday in Aries.  This is a very special and potent New Moon because it is the first of the astrological year (which began on March 20).  It offers another opportunity for setting goals (New Years Revolutions).  It is also a good time for making wishes (more than one and no more than ten).  Mars will trine Pluto and Black Moon Lilith at this New Moon creating opportunities to release addictions or addictive patterns/ behavior.  And that is it, the end, or the end of the beginning or AN end of A beginning.

Inspired by Pluto’s retrograde in the sign of Capricorn (structures) the theme this week is ROOMS.  Rooms, real, remembered or imagined.

WELCOME TRAVELERS!

The Eclipses are now behind us and Jupiter is moving direct in the sign of Leo.  Jupiter expands the themes of the sign where the planet takes up residence.  While retrograde, Jupiter’s focus was on internal investigations of Leo themes, some of those themes being: self-expression- what helps or hinders your expression, what you love, what prevents you from loving yourself and others, where have you forgotten how to play etc.  Now that the planet is moving direct, these things you may have been ruminating on may now be presented with more opportunities for expression: love and creative projects, launch.  That is all I will say of the astrological weather here.  I discuss the rest of the potential below, under the card for the week, THE 8 OF PENTACLES!

Without further ado! The general card from Amy von Harrington’s deck for all, for all the week (individual cards for the zodiac signs are pulled from the MOTHERPEACE deck):

8 OF PENTACLES

When this card surfaces it suggests we must be in or approaching Taurus season.  The theme of this card is dedication.  Typically, dedicating yourself to a goal, skill, practice or path.  Mars and Venus are currently in Taurus and while the Sun and Mercury are still in Aries, both will be answering to Taurus since Aries’ ruler, Mars has currently moved its base of operations into Taurus.  I know this sounds a little confusing, but the thing to understand is that there is heavy emphasis on Taurus themes and objectives among the stars and planets right now.
The Eclipses are over, but the changes they set in motion will unfold over the next six months (and in a broader sense, over the next 19 years).  This last Eclipse, squared Pluto, once again pushing us to make structural changes in the area of your chart where Capricorn is a resident, in order to accommodate your current state of evolution.  This Eclipse was also on axis with the Nodes of Fate suggesting a karmic release, letting go of old modes of operation which prevent our whole selves (Aries) from participating in partnerships (Libra) of all kinds.
The 8 of Pentacles is about choosing a path.  It usually refers to your life path, or a career path but it can also be indicative of how you get where you are going, the way you choose to reach a particular goal.  I remember when I was a kid my parents had an old record or maybe it was a cassette tape and one of the songs was, “The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond.”  Whenever the vocalist (I think it was Maxine Sullivan) would get to the line “O ye’ll take the high road, and I’ll take the low road, and I’ll be in Scotland afore ye…” I would get a very clear picture in my mind of the high road and the low road.  It was the only part of the whole record that I remember, probably because I had attached some sort of image to it.  Sometimes I’d switch the lyrics as I was singing along so that the other person was taking the low road.  I remember wondering why the low road was a faster.  Why would she get to Scotland first and was it a race?  I find myself often trying to determine where the high road is in any given situation even though I know it is usually the longer route.  The hard part is knowing which road is the “high road” and finding that sometimes you start on one path only to discover that the high road for you is somewhere else entirely.  The 8 of Pentacles as well as all the planets in Taurus or under Taurus’ influence recommend you put one foot in front of the other, take the path step by step.  You do have to choose how you want to proceed, but it doesn’t mean you can’t change your route should you decide you want to get where you are going more quickly or should you realize you’ve taken the low road when you were looking for the high one.

TAROTSCOPES for the week of 04/02/15

WELCOME BACK NAVIGATORS!

Hello!  Once again, I report from inside the storm.  Emily Trinkaus of Virgo Magic described the energy around this upcoming Eclipse as, “Wildly unpredictable, sometimes shocking Uranian energies are swirling about while we’re simultaneously pulled into the underworldly depths of our Plutonian shadows.”  This sounds very dramatic, but it feels dramatic and in my experience sometimes emphasizing the drama in a situation or feeling makes it easier to find the humor in it.  Laughing is one way to release the pressure, so is yelling or crying.  At this Eclipse there may be a tendency to project our problems or feelings onto other people so go easy and consider alternative forms of expression.  I discuss this Eclipse more under the card for the week, THE PAGE OF CUPS.  Additionally, I want say that Jupiter is preparing to go direct next Thursday.  We feel the effects of a planet’s shift for five days before and for five days after it changes direction.  The move is from internal exploration, expansion, to the outward expression of that internal expansion/ exploration.  I will discuss this move more next week… Onwards!

PAGE OF CUPS

I’ve started running again recently.  I put no pressure on myself.  I simply wear an appropriate outfit so that I am open to and ready for the possibility of exercise.  I put my music on shuffle because certain songs inspire sprinting and others rest.  Currently, my favorite songs to run to are “Run, Run, Run” by Ann Peebles and “I’m Not Tired Yet” By The Caravans.  When I start running it isn’t because some militant voice in my head is barking an order (that was my old approach), I’m propelled by a surge of joy, a desire to let myself loose.  I run because it feels good and I run for as long as the good feeling lasts, which right now is usually the length of a song.  I’m not sure what the experts would say about my method, but I don’t really care because I’m enjoying myself.  This brings me to the card for the week, the Page of Cups.
Pages are messengers and in the tarot, Pages also carry a message or point to where and how new information might be delivered.  In this case the message is of the Venusian variety, meaning love or creativity or perhaps a new project which leads to abundance.  In the traditional Raider- Waite deck the card shows a young man holding a cup.  He has locked eyes with a fish whose head is protruding from the cup.  The implication is one of surprise and spontaneity, the Page is caught off guard the way an idea or a new love often approaches.  In Amy Von Harrington’s version of the same card, the Page is holding a bowl of raw meat (most likely poultry) above his head.  His gaze rests on an additional pile of raw red meat being offered by a pair of hands.  This perfectly illustrates one of the underlying themes of this card, vulnerability.  Like the Fool, the Page of Cups is not moved by fear, he is more likely to be moved by a surge of joy, a desire to express a feeling or demonstrate his love.
This week we approach the final Eclipse of the season, occurring on April 4th.  The Page of Cups is a helpful guide or messenger on this journey lasting less than five minutes, but with influence potentially reverberating over the next two decades.  As I write this we are also approaching April Fool’s Day.  As a kid I hated this day because I was so easily fooled.  I’m still this way.  “Check out that old submarine wreckage,” a friend once said gesturing to a large rusted metal structure in a field.  It did look very much like a submarine, but the only body of water in the vicinity was an ankle deep stream.  “Really?” I exclaimed.  “How did it get here?”  The Page of Cups is gullible, vulnerable to deception because he is so open to the possibility of surprise, of adventure.  The fish springs from his cup because he is available to receive it.  We are all tender meats and it is a challenge not to look away from moments when this vulnerability is pointed out to us.
The Eclipse, which will happen on the same axis as the Nodes of Fate (14 degrees Libra), will also square Pluto, indicating a permanent change of some kind.  Because it is a Full Moon Lunar Eclipse, what is subject to change are feelings and in particular relationships (Libra) rather than the more apparent kinds of change Solar Eclipses often bring.  Have the ghosts of old grudges, arguments or family feuds been haunting you?  The Eclipse offers an opportunity to finally lay these old wounds and conflicts to rest, or at least the conflicting feelings surrounding these issues, so that you can start fresh, so that you can once again be open to the possibility of magic.

TAROTSCOPES for the week of 03/26/15

WELCOME TRAVELERS!

Astrologically speaking, this week is a sort of stain left by shifts that have already occurred and it is also a week full of anticipation of changes heading our way.  I discuss most of this under the card for the week, the 8 OF WANDS so I won’t say much more about it now.  A few planets have shifted signs or are shifting signs- Venus to Taurus and Mercury to Pisces.  Venus, as the ruler of Taurus, feels right at home in this sign, but Mercury in Pisces can be a little like a radio in a bathtub, and it is often easier to convey your feelings in sound, image or art than in concrete words.  We can’t go back so let’s move on!

8 OF WANDS

The other night I dreamed everyone was going to Mars.  I was walking along some body of water where several boats were docked.  There were lights on the water and lights in the sky and I tried to figure out which one was the “Red Planet”, Mars.  It was too dark to see anything else, but a voice nearby asked if I was going?  “To Mars?” I asked.  “When it is more affordable.  When it is more affordable, I’d love to go.”  This dream was strangely appropriate given the current astrology and the card for the week.
We are now firmly in Aries season and Mars is the ruler of Aries, the driving force.  The card for the week, the 8 OF WANDS is a fire card.  It is about initiating many things, an explosion of possibilities.  Each one is begun with the thought of what it could grow up to be.  Like planting seeds, you hold in your imagination (or in your hand, the image on the packet) the potential of the plant the seed could become.  You typically plant more than one seed incase some of them don’t take to the soil.  I chose the seed metaphor because it is spring, but the 8 of Wands is also a card of travel, of destinations.
We are currently sandwiched between two Eclipses, the New Moon Solar Eclipse that happened on March 20th at the final degree of Pisces and the Lunar Eclipse which will take place on April 4th at 14 degrees Libra.  Solar Eclipses typically push change in more concrete, tangible ways and Lunar Eclipses tend to be more emotional, a change of heart or mind.  With some of the literal obstructions in our lives cleared or clearing, we can now think about the emotional barriers that may be holding us back or preventing us from achieving our goals/dreams.  The 8 of Wands asks you to set your destination, or perhaps more than one.  And it asks that you set your target without trying to determine the possibility or impossibility of that dream being realized.  “When it is more affordable, I will travel to Mars,” is a good example of this and even now that I’m awake and no longer dreaming, I feel the same way.  When it is an option and affordable, yes I would like to see Mars.
As we get closer to the Lunar Eclipse, emotional obstacles may present themselves, providing an opportunity to consciously throw those barriers into the garbage disposal of the Eclipse.  The other day I was giving a tarot lesson to a student.  We were sitting in the park under a tree and I pointed to a playground a little ways off,  “Say you wanted to get to that playground so you could swing on the swings.  If you are afraid you might say, “I can’t get there because there is a giant tree between here and there and the ground is uneven and I might trip etc.”  “But,” I continued.  “If you start walking in that direction and confront those things as they arise, you will arrive at the swings with a sense of accomplishment that probably has more to do with the fears you overcame in the process than actually reaching the swings themselves.”  This week, think about the joy of setting your course.  Allow yourself to be moved and propelled by the joy you feel and worry about the uneven ground you have to tread later when it actually presents itself.

This card has come up several times since I’ve been writing Tarotscopes.  I think its even come up during Eclipse Season before, which makes sense.  The Devil is about taking all the feelings, ideas, concepts, anything that extinguishes or stifles your creativity, generosity, ability to give and receive love etc., to the mattresses.  Well, actually, this card draws attention to those issues, it doesn’t necessarily suggest how to overcome them.  The Devil can show us where the prisons (often internally) are and/or where power is being abused.
I talked about the Uranus-Pluto Square and Saturn stationing to go Retrograde last week and I want to move forward and just talk about the Eclipses because it seems more clean, more organized, easier to deal with.  But it is important to mention them again because we may be feeling the Uranus-Pluto Square for the next few years and the Saturn Station we typically feel for 5 days prior and for 5 days after.  So we may experience Saturn’s transition all the way up until the Eclipse on Thursday night/ Friday morning.
Because Saturn is considered the planet which presides over time, it can feel like time itself has stopped.  Historically, clocks were stopped at the moment a person passed away, the origins of this tradition are disputed as well as the reasons behind its practice.  One suggestion, was that it allowed mourners to grieve without worrying about how much time had passed or how much time had been spent in mourning.  The other day my brother and I were walking around the lake and one of us mentioned my grandfather who passed away in the fall. “Man, I miss that guy,” my brother sighed.  And it felt like we both took a long breath or pause, either to remember him or to mourn him or both.  Grief isn’t measured in time.  I mention all of this because there is a huge amount of energy this month around change and letting go.  While some of these changes may happen on a specific day or are, in some way, marked in time, the grief you may feel around those shifts or around letting go of the past may not run on any kind of linear time.  Grief typically comes and goes as it pleases.  You may have felt the Saturn Station as time standing still.  I certainly didn’t experience it that way, but that is likely because it came so closely to the final Uranus-Pluto Square, which from the micro to the macro level asked us (and will continue to urge us) to make changes.  With Uranus in Aries as the instigator of these changes (lightening bolt changes, flashes of insight and understanding), we are asked to consider who we are (Aries) and whether or not the structure (Capricorn) of our lives supports or stifles us.  Pluto is the planet of transition and death and rebirth, suggesting that one structure may need to fall or be reassembled in order to create a new one which is more supportive of the individual, of who we really are and what we need.
When I was visiting the doctor the other day there was a TV in the room and I was watching the news when a nurse came in with some paper work for me to sign.  “Are they on strike at McDonalds?”  She asked me staring at the screen and handing me the clipboard absentmindedly.  “They are protesting working conditions,” I said. “Some people have been burned on the job and McDonald’s hasn’t done anything to prevent it.”  We watched the screen together for a few more seconds and then she sighed and said, “Everyone wants a union.”  I was left wondering what her work environment was like and if she was a member of a nurses union.  I found out later, when my curiosity got the better of me and I looked it up, that the hospital had been accused of union-busting including interrogating individuals about union activity.  Both of these situations are perfect examples of the Uranus-Pluto Square and the Devil card, individuals and specific situations revealing larger structural problems or weaknesses (Uranus-Pluto Square) and the abuse of power by employers (The Devil).
Okay all of this and still we have not discussed the upcoming Eclipse!!  Which, by the time these Tarotscopes get published, will probably be happening in a matter of hours!  This first Solar Eclipse at the very last degree of Pisces has been much talked about among astrologers because it is an ending that echoes.  It is happening at the last degree of the last sign of the zodiac and it happens at the Equinox, as we move from winter to spring, symbolically- death to rebirth.  In her blog, Anne Ortelee wrote, “Eclipse seasons are big departure time periods.  The Sun and Moon link up with the Nodes of Fate and Destiny, inviting us to change our paths and course correct our lives…Time to leave earth, the job, the relationship, or the situation that has outgrown you (or vise versa).”  This Eclipse is in Pisces (a very mature Pisces since it is at the last degree) and Pisces, ruled by the planet Neptune which represents the ocean, the collective unconscious.  We are being asked to make changes on an individual level, but just like the ocean these changes effect the whole.  When you dump something in the water in Alaska or Japan it spreads.  It may be diluted by distance, but it still impacts the ocean as a whole.  When you decide to resist change, against your better judgement, or your true feelings, you do so in an ocean and just like an oil spill or nuclear power plant meltdown we may not know the impact of a decision (conscious or unconscious) until after it is made.  I’ve mentioned this before, but it is worth repeating now, that whenever I sit with a client in a reading I set a silent intention to work with that person to find a sustainable form of happiness and contentment not just because is helpful to the client, but because this client effects the ocean.  When one person feels happy and content they are in a better position to help the people around them.  You may be worried about leaving a job or relationship because of how it will impact your co-workers or your partner, but consider the ocean.  Consider that when you make a conscious decision to stay stuck or imprisoned by something (even if it is just a frame of mind) you also may be choosing to forfeit your happiness and contentment which may, in one way or another impact, if not the whole ocean, the waters in which you swim.
(Wading In the Water- Ella Jenkins (This is a repeat, but it fits here so nicely, I thought I’d use it again)

Without further ado! The general card from Amy von Harrington’s deck for all, for all the week (individual cards for the zodiac signs are pulled from the MOTHERPEACE deck):

9 OF WANDS

So much is happening this week!  I will try to lay it all out in order.  First, Juno in Leo Stations to go direct on Friday and trines Saturn on Saturday.  Juno represents partnership, in Greek myth she was Zeus’ wife and was known to put up with a lot of crap.  Which already calls in the card for the week the 9 of Wands.  The 9 of Wands represents someone who has weathered many storms and there may be one more to tackle before a feeling of accomplishment or victory can be achieved.  Juno’s station story is similar.  If you have experienced difficulty in a relationship throughout Juno’s retrograde then there may be a moment (Friday when Juno stations) when you pause to reflect on how you want to proceed and what it means to be victorious in this situation.  Break ups are a possible and not uncommon outcome of this transit.  If this is the case, it may be helpful to note that when Juno trines stationing Saturn the following day, it indicates that a new love is just around the corner.  If you decide to stay with your partner then there may be, as the 9 of Wands indicates, one last challenge before you make it to more placid waters.
I mentioned it briefly above, but the other big news is Saturn’s station to go retrograde on Saturday.  Anyone who has already or is currently going through their Saturn Return knows how powerful this planet is in a persons chart and life.  My brother has an artist friend who lives in Chicago and I often think about one project he did where he put a sign on a major art museum’s door that said, “Closed to rethink what we have done.”  He reported that it kept the museum closed for half an hour.  This is a reasonable example of how we might experience the Saturn Retrograde.  Saturn represents structure, so when it goes retrograde we may find it necessary to “rethink what we have done.”  Saturn is associated with time and timing and so in retrograde motion things move much more slowly, giving us more time to reflect.  It is not uncommon to back out of commitments you’ve made or to recommit to things you’ve neglected.  Keep in mind that Saturn deals with things in the long term so these are usually big decisions, paths that you’ve committed to.
Now would be a good time to mention that it is also Eclipse Season.  Eclipse Season is the big deep clean that happens every spring and fall, allowing us to clear out obstructions and debris which prevent or inhibit our growth.  The first eclipse of the season will happen next week on March 20 as we also move from winter to spring and Pisces to Aries, but I will discuss that specific eclipse more next week.  There is enough to focus on this week and one of the most significant aspects I have not yet mentioned, the 7th and final Uranus-Pluto square.
The Uranus-Pluto square will be exact on Monday the 16th.  Mars will energize this aspect as it is only within a few degrees of Uranus and thus forming a square to Pluto, putting more pressure on Pluto in Capricorn to change.  The Pele Report this week did a good job of explaining (with humor) how this aspect might be experienced by us here on earth.  Uranus is the lighting bolt, the shock of change, throwing its fire in Pluto in Capricorn’s side demanding we make changes to structures which are no longer serving their supportive function, structures which have become stifling or oppressive.  The Pluto-Uranus square is a generational aspect meaning that it influences and informs a generation of people.  Micro and macro we are being asked to change and change is often stressful, which once again brings up some themes from the 9 of Wands.
The 9 of Wands acknowledges the toll that stress can take on the body.  It is important to schedule breaks, pauses in your day, week and month to recover from and assimilate to all the changes.  Even if you haven’t noticed anything changing in your immediate environment, on a national and global scale the news has been rife with turbulence.  Just reading about it can cause stress.  Astrologer, Anne Ortelee said in her blog a few weeks ago that she had read an article about the brain that said our brain reads even imaginary situations as real.  So watching an action movie can literally get your adrenaline going and when a movie is sad you cry real tears of sadness.  Reading about change or war or conflict can also be experienced as stress in the body.  So this week don’t forget to relax or enjoy yourself.  This past weekend I drove an hour to the beach just to watch the sunset and eat french fries.  I decided I needed a break, however brief and it was completely worth it.  Consider making these kinds of breaks a priority in the coming weeks.

THEME

There seems to be no shortage of themes when we are in Pisces season, finding them feels natural and spontaneous.  This week, as I began to pull the cards for each sign, I found the lyrics to songs popping into my head.  Music is associated with Pisces and through out this season you may find lyrics and tunes popping into your own heads quite frequently.  Mercury joins the Sun in Pisces this week, further emphasizing music as a language which may communicate more easily the things we wish to say and the feelings we want to convey.

TAROTSCOPES for the week of 03/04/15

WELCOME TRAVELERS!

March was in like a Lion this year and astrologically speaking these winds are only expected to continue.  We are on the edge of a Full Moon in Virgo, exact tomorrow (Thursday) at about 11 am PST, which may in fact be a pleasant reprieve before eclipse season goes into full swing.  I won’t go into the astrological significance of the Full Moon here, as I describe it in more detail under the card for the week, the 6 OF CUPS, but I would like to mention that on March 14th Saturn will go retrograde.  When Saturn goes retrograde the emphasis is on revisiting and revising any long term commitments you’ve made, it is a time of restructuring.  I will discuss this influence in more detail next week as it approaches.

6 OF CUPS

Here comes eclipse season.  The kick off is this Thursday afternoon just after a Full Moon in Virgo.  Emily Trinkaus wrote an insightful post (http://virgomagic.com/2015/03/virgo-full-moon-2015/) about this moon in her blog Virgo Magic (I encourage you to read the whole post if you are curious about the deeper significance of this moon).  She quotes the poet Mary Oliver:  “I don’t know exactly what a prayer is./ I do know how to pay attention,”  which Trinkaus says is “a beautiful reflection of the Virgo- Pisces polarity activated by this Full Moon.”  Pisces represents the prayer portion of this quote and Virgo, with their noted attention to detail represents the second part.  Recently I was reflecting on being someone whose work is considered by many to be “out there.”  Where “there” is no one really knows, no one can say exactly, not even the people who work, play or create “there,” it is a mystery.  This is Pisces, that ocean of mystery and intangibility. It’s easy to get lost out there because it is so expansive, no one knows the limits of this place or if there are any.  Most of my family is firmly rooted, anchored to the earth, “salt of the earth” many of them might be called.  I have found myself having the very conversation Oliver describes, with them.  They “don’t know exactly what a prayer is,” but they do know “how to pay attention.”  While at times I’ve found our differing perspectives exasperating and have even gone as far as to “climb in my boat” and say, “you don’t understand me,” I always come back because I find the conversation between “out there” and “down to earth” so important.
Okay, before I get to the card for the week (I promise I will) I want to mention that we are once again approaching an exact Uranus-Pluto square (March 16).  This is their final meeting before the two pull apart from this aspect not to return for years to come.  We are already seeing the tension build with more deaths of civilians at the hands of police.  These incidents (and individuals (Aries)) reveal (Uranus) the weaknesses in the current structure (Capricorn) of law enforcement (Pluto).  The time (Capricorn) has come (Aries) to make a radical change (Uranus).
All that and still no mention of the card for the week.  Lets talk about this lighter note, the 6 of Cups.  The 6 of Cups is about nostalgia, childhood, a good feeling.  A few months ago, I mentioned in one Tarotscope, a memorable trip to the dentist.  It was memorable for several reasons, partly because it took place in Colombia, but also because the dentist himself was so singular.  I apologize if you are hearing this story for the second time, but it bears repeating.  I was getting a cavity drilled and filled and as he was about to inject the anesthetic he started talking about how my father.  He had worked on my father’s teeth a few times and he said, “You know your father loves you very much.  He is very proud of you, he tells me every time I see him.”  I found this peculiar and highly unlikely, not because I doubt my father loves me, but because it is so difficult to say much of anything at the dentist.  Despite my skepticism, his words, tone and delivery flooded me with a warm feeling, with love.  At that moment he injected the anesthetic and for the first time in my dental history, I received the needle without pain.  This is the power of feeling good, of a good feeling, it is in itself an anesthetic.  As we approach eclipse season it may be important to recall moments when you felt good, not to avoid the pain of change and transition, which this season inevitably brings, but to ease the pain and provide direction to the transition.  The idea behind making any change is typically to get to a better feeling place.  It may be important in the coming weeks to periodically remind yourself what “good” feels like so you can find it when the dust settles.
(Singing in my Soul- Willie Mae Ford Smith)

THEME

I played a sort of game with the theme this week.  I often find, that when I’m feeling deeply emotional (as we all may be feeling during Pisces season) it is difficult to describe or discuss the feelings because they can’t be shuttled into a simple container of “sad”, “mad” or “bad.”  When this happens I often try to figure out what the feeling is similar to, how it might best be described.  So for your theme this week I’ve asked two questions of each sign:  What does it feel like?  and What does it sound like?

WELCOME WANDERERS!

How is it that we are already less than a week a way from March?  It seems someone must have taken a tuck in time somewhere along the way this month.  The Sun now has both feet in Pisces, Mars and Venus have skipped ahead into Aries and Mercury is still making its way through Aquarius.  The other astrological news I will discuss under the card for the week the 3 OF PENTACLES!

3 OF PENTACLES

The Classical music station in Los Angeles has been doing their member drive recently.  Because of the drive and the Oscars, the station has been playing orchestral music from movies. The theme from “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” for example, has been played every day for a week.  “This isn’t classical music,” I kept hearing my grandfather (a connoisseur of classical music) say.  But today as I was listening, I found my attitude towards the song bending slightly, becoming more pliable.  After the theme had played for what must have been the 5th time this morning, the host’s voice crackled, “Is there a day you couldn’t energize by putting that on?”  I repeated the question to myself.  I saw Harrison Ford running from that giant stone ball, making narrow escapes from every possible peril.  Growing up, when I was presented with a difficult situation, I often put it in terms of the kinds of situations Indiana Jones found himself in in “Raiders of the Lost Ark” or “The Temple of Doom.”  I would think, is this situation more like being chased by a giant cement ball or is this more like a pit of snakes?  I’d forgotten this until I heard the song playing and the host asking listeners if there was a day this theme couldn’t energize.  This simple question reminded listeners that the music they provide is more than a collection of pleasant sounds, it can change your mood, your day and even your ability to accomplish tasks.  In fact the reason I was listening to the station in the first place is because it helps me focus while I’m writing Tarotscopes.
The card for the week the 3 of Pentacles is frequently associated with work and collaboration.  During the member drive the hosts kept reiterating that the station existed because of member support and that it would continue to exist based on member support.  The idea they were promoting is similar to the idea promoted by the 3 of Pentacles, that the radio station is collaborative.  They broadcast a certain kind of music and fans of this music lend their support by making financial contributions on a monthly or one-time basis.
The sun has moved into Pisces and Mars and Venus have barreled ahead into Aries.  The two planets high-fived briefly last week at the first degree of Aries setting off a 9 month cycle around love, passion and desire.  Mars and Venus will be collaborating over the next 9 months to help you act on your desires and achieve your dreams.  This conjunction was visible in the evening sky.  You could see the moon, Mars and Venus clustered, for me, just above a couple of palm trees outside my house.  In the same way it might be helpful to look at the situations in your life as collaborations, seen and unseen.  And where an element is unseen, make it visible simply by acknowledging its support.  The current dance between Ceres and Pluto, in a Yod formation with Jupiter and Chiron, further emphasize the need to acknowledge all the elements with which we collaborate:  who and what we are nurtured by and how they contribute to the achievement of goals and desired outcomes.  Oscar acceptance speeches are almost entirely opportunities for this form of acknowledgment.  Winners stand at the podium holding the golden statue, glancing at it, and trying to recall what happened before this moment, who was on the trail to that podium and this Oscar.  What is often neglected in these speeches is the understanding of the structure of power that also supported the moment, the win.  I won’t go into that right now because it could be another post entirely or actually a whole book, but I think it is extremely important to acknowledge it as a collaborator.
This week past week my friends and I went on an urban forage with Nancy Klehm, someone we have been making a documentary about for the last few years.  Nancy always reminds people on forages not to just thoughtlessly harvest or consume plants, even if the plant is a “hated weed,” pulling it could disrupt the soil and cause erosion or soil degradation.  Nancy says that she will sometimes give an area or plant some water from her water bottle as a way of giving back and giving thanks to the plants for what they are providing.
Where in your life has the balance been upset?  Where are you giving more than you are getting back and where are you taking more than you are giving?  What can be done to rectify the situation?  It has been said giving credit, thanks and acknowledgement and accepting credit, thanks and acknowledgment is something like breathing once you begin.
(Dear Mama- 2Pac)

THEME

The theme this week is BLIND SPOTS.  Pisces is associated with the 12th house and represents those areas that are mysterious, hidden from view or our conscious minds.  In Pisces, questions often generate more questions, but by asking them we may eventually uncover things we couldn’t see before.

TAROTSCOPES for the week of 02/19/15

WELCOME BACK NAVIGATORS!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!  It is the year of the Sheep/ Goat!  What will this year bring?  From my research of the Chinese Zodiac sign the reoccuring themes were peace, harmony and calmness.  Unfortunately this does not necessarily mean the year will be entirely peaceful or harmonious, but it does suggest that when we encounter struggle, conflict, or even war, that peace is where our individual or collective thoughts are likely to turn.

Okay, other than the New Moon we just experienced which I discuss in more detail under the card for the week, the ACE OF SWORDS, a few planets change signs this week.  First the sun moved from Aquarius to Pisces shortly after the New Moon on Wednesday.  For the few days that all these planets are knocking into one another in Pisces we may feel very dreamy or even sleepy.  For myself I've been feeling excessively distractable, running out the door to go satisfy random cravings or disappearing down internet wormholes.  But this feeling quickly subsides when both Mars and Venus leap into Aries, the fiery action sign of which Mars is the ruler.  Passion and impulse prevail under these conditions which can be thrilling, but also potentially hazardous if you are already passionately and impulsively inclined.

Without further ado! The general card from Amy von Harrington’s deck for all, for all the week (individual cards for the zodiac signs are pulled from the MOTHERPEACE deck):

ACE OF SWORDS

The 29th degree, the anoretic degree (the very last degree of a sign) is itchy and that’s where this New Moon sits before both the sun and moon leap from the Aquarius diving board into the pool of Pisces.  I find myself wanting very badly to be in the world at this minute.  I’m finding it very hard, for example, to even write these Tarotscopes, one leg wants run out the door and the other feels reluctant to change positions.  Aquarius is the sign of the future, but at the anoretic degree a palpable desire for change often exists in equal strength to the fear of throwing yourself into the next possibility, the unknown as represented by Pisces.  As I was writing this I heard a line in my head from the original “Grey Gardens” documentary.  Edith Bouvier Beale shouts to her daughter Edie, “You’re in this world you know,” and then more softly, “You’re not out of the world.”  Aquarius is the sign of the eccentric, the inventor, the innovator.  At the ultimate degree of the sign it is easy to feel like we are seeing things from a great distance, that we are out of this world.  But take it from a rather eccentric social outcast like Mrs. Bouvier Beale, We are ALL very much in this world.
By the time you read this, the sun and moon will be frolicking in the ocean of Pisces and the feeling will probably be something like, and now what?  Pisces is the unknown, the mystery of life.  The tarot card which represents this sign is the Moon.  Whenever this card comes up in a reading, I try to direct the clients attention to the present moment.  What is happening for you right now, in this minute?  For me the kitchen sink is dripping one drop every other second.  For awhile it was driving me crazy because I was thinking about the future and how California is running out of drinkable water and one day they will trace the shortage back to my sink.  “Disaster could have been averted, if it had not been for one drippy sink in Los Angeles county,” they’ll say on the evening news.  Our landlord only responds to crisis in a timely manner and unfortunately my sink doesn’t qualify.  However bringing myself back to the present moment I quickly realized I could still collect the water and use it in the same way I would the tap.  And this thought brings me to the card for the week, the Ace of Swords.
The Ace of Swords is a thought and a seed from which future thoughts may sprout.  It also represents a choice.  The other day I was thinking about the places where I feel a sense of limitation or constraint in my life.  Growing up we didn’t have a lot of money.  We weren’t poor, or maybe we were, but I never felt limited by my family’s financial situation in part, because of the careful way my mother chose to talk about finances in front of my brother and I.  It was really only when I would go to friends houses that I began to wonder why our house was smaller or why we took vacations in places like Kansas instead of Hawaii.  Recently, my mother said reflecting on our past, “I was always careful to say, ‘I choose not to do something’ rather than, ‘I can’t afford it.’”  There are things of course that people don’t choose and can’t control, but there is always a choice about how we want to think or talk about a situation which is what the card for the week, the Ace of Swords suggests.
The circle or sphere is my favorite shape and it is the shape of the tarot deck I typically use when I give readings.  What I love about this shape is that it implies cycles and orbits.  What goes around comes around, what goes up must come down…and then up again.  Choosing to be positive or optimistic means acknowledging the cyclical nature of things.  When I sit down to do a reading with someone I understand that the common thread, between almost everyone on the planet is a desire to be happy or content.  So as I shuffle the cards I’m often thinking about where happiness or contentment lives in the person sitting opposite me.  I often find that when things are good, people look for me to tell them where the “bad” is lurking and when things are feeling bad they look for the light.  More than once I’ve had clients ask, “But do you see anything bad?”  This always catches me off guard even though I’ve heard it before, mostly because I choose not to think of things in these terms.  Humans are such strange animals, we often out think ourselves.  When another animal gets cold they go sit in the sun, they will always look for the light if that is where they find nourishment.  But humans, myself included, often get trapped thinking misery has more value.  As we dive into Pisces, into the future and into the unknown, let there be light.  Chose to be optimistic, because whatever the outcome, it feels good to be happy and optimistic right now.

TAROTSCOPES for the week of 02/12/15

WELCOME TRAVELERS!

It's Black History Month and a new week, a week we've never seen before and will never see again.  Everything is rare, I'm feeling it.  St. Valentine's Day is on the way and while this day often inspires a variety of emotions, both pleasant and unpleasant it is also just a day, as unique as any other day, on or off the calendar.  I like to take the holidays suggested and create my own ritual around the suggestion. St. Valentine's Day is supposed to be about love so I'll take it and I have.  It is my day of self-indulgence.  I make myself a love music mix and my favorite dinner (it changes every year), watch a few episodes of the Mary Tyler Moore Show (a reminder that love is all around) and get a decent night's sleep.  I've done this every year for almost 10 years now.  I mention this because the astrological weather around the 14th is a bit stormy.

Earlier this week Venus joined with Chiron and may have brought up some wounds we have around love, creativity and/or money.  Later this week Ceres will be aspecting both Uranus in Pluto creating tensions I describe in more detail under the card for the week the KNIGHT OF PENTACLES.  I would like to add, however, that Ceres is one of the newer planetary discoveries.  Astronomy and Astrology is just as far behind politically, in many ways, as the rest of society.  Planets and asteroids have historically been named after male gods, to compensate for this imbalance many recent celestial discoveries have been named after goddesses.  The importance of these new discoveries has also been debated astrologers, Ceres is one of those.  Ceres is actually larger in size than Pluto and was upgraded to a dwarf planet.  Pay attention this week as Ceres aspects several planets and see for yourself if her influence is significant in your own life.

Without further ado! The general card from Amy von Harrington’s deck for all, for all the week (individual cards for the zodiac signs are pulled from the MOTHERPEACE deck):

KNIGHT OF PENTACLES

On Friday the 13th (!!!) Ceres (currently classified as a dwarf planet) meets with Pluto in Capricorn.  The two will be in conversation for the next few months, but this is their first meeting, setting off a new 5 year cycle.  Ceres is the Roman name for the Greek goddess, Demeter, goddess of the harvest.  This planet represents nurturing, motherhood, food etc.  Astrologer, Anne Ortelee described Ceres as more of a grandmother in archetype.  She is not a new mother, she’s raised her children to adulthood and so she understands what it means to nurture at every stage of a child’s development.  Pluto (Hades) and Ceres (Demeter) have a long standing relationship.  Persephone was Demeter’s daughter and it was Hades who stole her away to the underworld.  Before Ceres meets with Pluto, she will first square Uranus on the 12th indicating a need to let something go, perhaps a creative project or a relationship that is no longer nurturing or fruitful.  When Pluto and Demeter connect the following day we are reminded of the temporal nature of people and things.  On a global scale we may be reminded of our dwindling natural resources.  Certain plants or animals that have been living on the brink of extinction may now disappear.  We make our home somewhere but everything we are given is not for keeps.  As an older astrologer told me a few weeks ago, “we own nothing, we are given stewardship of things”  which implies a sense of responsibility.  That which we call home on a big or small scale cannot be taken for granted.
This week I got an eye exam for the first time in seven years.  I was first asked to look through a thick metal eye mask.  “Focus on the little red house in the distance,” the assistant instructed.  At first all I saw was a red stain against a white background, but after a few seconds something more solid emerged from the blur.  I saw a small red house with a chimney seated on a patch of green grass.  This felt very symbolic of the Ceres/ Pluto conjunction.  What is brought into focus is a clearer picture of how we nurture and what we are in turn nurtured by, of that which we call home.  I remember talking to a friend who was a home owner about repairs and adjustments they were making.  They expressed that the work was never ending, that it was unclear when they would be “finished” working on the house.  “But that must also be part of the love,” I said.  They agreed that the work they did on the house created a stronger sense of attachment.
I once worked for a gardner who told me that she had worked on a garden that was full of fruit trees, but the owner of the garden refused to eat the fruit from the trees because she thought they were dirty or full of worms.  In so many ways we have become disconnected from our home, planet Earth.  The Ceres/ Pluto conjunction may also serve as a reminder of power imbalances between humans and the natural world.  We may be forced to see more directly the ways in which we abuse our privilege as stewards of the earth’s resources and also the ways in which we are quite vulnerable to the earth’s natural processes (aka natural disasters).
Okay, all that and I’ve not yet mentioned the card for the week, the Knight of Pentacles.  The Knight of  Pentacles is an earth card.  It is about setting goals and working diligently towards those goals.  It’s about bringing into focus a picture of home, of what we are trying to achieve, create, make, do, nurture and be nurtured by.  During my eye exam every test asked me to focus on something, a dot, or a letter or the doctor’s finger.  As Mercury is now moving forward it may be more easy to communicate what we are seeing, what our vision or goals are for the future.  As we articulate these things it may also become clear what is not a part of the picture or what is not nurturing or supportive of that process.  Relax your eyes, don’t strain.  Allow your vision to become clear by making slight adjustments, by moving closer or farther away.  Become a student of nature, notice the ways mother earth handles difficulties or generates abundance.
(Why we wear our hair like this- Kathleen Cleaver of the Black Panther Party)

THEME

The theme this week is home or homes, actually.  Vesta is the astroid which represents home and hearth, but it popped into my mind with the Ceres/ Pluto conjunction because Ceres is about nurturing and feeling cared for and I found my mind wandering through all of the various places where I’ve hung my hat and felt nourished (or in some cases a lack there of) over the years.

TAROTSCOPES for the week of 02/04/15

WELCOME WANDERS OF THE ASTRAL PLAIN!

This is the last week of Mercury's Retrograde (for now), technically ending on February 11, but the envelope days (4-5 days on either side of this date) you may feel as residue from the retrograde.  I will summarize the astrological events of the week by reiterating, what I express in greater detail under the card for the week (IX The Hermit).  There are 4 planets in Pisces right now, including Chiron, planet of wounds in healing.  This is a very sensitive, watery time, take your time and don't push (also suggested by the Mercury Retrograde).  You could feel close to tears periodically throughout the week due to heightened emotions and others may be feeling the same way so be conscious around communication this week.  Several planets will aspect the Nodes of Fate this week asking us to consider how we collaborate and also showing us where our walls or points of resistance are when dealing with others.

Yesterday, was a Full Moon in Leo, which met with Jupiter also in Leo and trined Uranus in Aries.  This was an extremely pleasant Full Moon.  Leo is the sign of fun, creativity, and romance.  Jupiter added joy and abundance to this radiant light and the trine to Uranus further emphasized the creative potential of this configuration.

IX THE HERMIT

Lately, I’ve felt like I’m broadcasting Tarotscopes from inside the storm.  I’ve been struggling for perspective, to hold my wet clothes away from me, but with all these planets in Pisces, aspecting and influencing other planets and heightening emotions, it is very nearly impossible to get any distance from your feelings.  We are all swimming the ocean and surrendering to any sudden waves.  Pisces natives, may be weathering this storm a little more easily than the rest of us, as they are accustom to navigating rough water.
The card for the week is the Hermit.  The Hermit suggests how we might make the best use of the current astrological weather.  This week was Groundhog Day and Imbolc.  Groundhog Day is actually said to have derived from Imbolc, which celebrates the midpoint between winter solstice and spring equinox.  This is when we often receive the first signs that spring is on its way and it is a tradition to put candles in your windows to symbolically welcome spring into your home.  This light also seems very reflective of the Hermit.  In the traditional Rider-Waite deck, the Hermit is depicted carrying a lantern illuminated by the Seal of Solomon (a six-pointed star).  This lantern represents the wisdom he has gained from self-study and isolation.  Our current isolation may be enforced by weather (astrological or otherwise), but, rather than dwelling on the loneliness or feelings of disconnection (the shadow side of Pisces) which may accompany our isolation, we have the opportunity to fill ourselves with the light of wisdom and spiritual understanding (also Pisces).
Every year on Groundhog Day I watch the movie “Groundhog Day.”  This year I gave myself the exercise of trying to imagine what it would be like if I was trapped in a day.  In the film, Bill Murray’s character, Phil, is the only one who has a sense of the repetition and so he is the only one who is changing, he is the only one who can change.  There is a sense of isolation and loneliness to Phil’s situation because no one else is sharing in his experience.  Being forced to repeat a day that no one else is, where you are the only variable in the situation, forces you to confront yourself.
Lately, I’ve been particularly hard on myself, criticizing myself for the smallest mistake.  To this critical voice I find myself saying, “Step off!”  The Hermit is associated with the sign of Virgo, famous for their attention to detail, but for the same reason, those born under the sign are also known to be overly self-critical and at times pessimistic.  When you look at anything under a microscope you are bound to see the holes.  Groundhog Day is about seeing your shadow.  In psychology, the shadow is the part of ourselves we are afraid to examine, the aspects of our personality with which we may be dissatisfied, the “holes” or “imperfections.”  It is interesting that Groundhog Day comes so close to Valentine’s Day, a celebration of love.  If Groundhog Day is about seeing or confronting your shadow and Valentine’s Day is about love, then the combination of these two would suggest a compassionate self-examination, to look at oneself with eyes of love.  According to psychologist Carl Jung, it is from our shadow that we tend to scrutinize or judge others, our own feelings of inferiority, projected on another as moral deficiencies.  Or as RuPaul said, “If you don’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?”

TAROTSCOPES for the week of 01/28/15

WELCOME TRAVELERS!

Welcome to another week!  February is fast approaching and so is a full moon on the 3rd in the sign of Leo.  I will discuss this moon more next week, but full moons always ask us to examine what we would like to release or what challenges we are currently facing which we would like to overcome.  Using the energy of the Full Moon can help you tackle those obstacles.  More specifically, the Leo Full Moon asks, "What is blocking your shine or preventing you from fully embodying yourself?"  Have you been consistently setting aside creative projects for compensatory work or to please others? The Full Moon may assist you in clearing those obstructions.  Beyond the moon there are other pressing astrological transits I will discuss under the card for the week, the 3 of Cups!

3 OF CUPS

While most retrogrades indicate a time of internal investigation, this Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius, the sign of friends, groups and associations, may emphasize instead interactions between people and  in turn the internal ramifications of those associations.  Besides the Mercury Retrograde, this week Chiron and Mars meet in Pisces, a configuration which happens only once every two years.  Pisces is the sign which represents the spiritual connection between people, a sort of wordless communication that exists when people come together with a mutual affinity or understanding.  The unfortunate potential of this meeting is that Mars, warrior planet of action, has a tendency to poke rather hastily at an already sensitive area.  In this case, the sensitivity may be around where you feel different from others, where your beliefs separate you from the herd.  The challenge will be to hear what everyone has to say without judgement, without attempting to distance yourself from an unpopular idea in order to avoid alienation yourself.  It may be important to note during this transit the place to find common ground may be in our differences, in the places where we feel alienated.
The 3 of Cups depicts a good time shared.  With Chiron playing an important roll this week we may not begin in the place indicated by the 3 of Cups, but we can set our course and have this as our destination.  My neighbor-friend once told me, and I’ve come back to it again and again, that when we are confronted with conflict it is easy to assume that what we want is inherently at odds with others desires.  But it is important to step back and consider that what you want could ultimately be beneficial to all parties involved.  The 3 of Cups is an attainable goal, but there may be some muck to wade through on the way there.  Part of finding a resolution may start by yourself what you really want.  While a desire may seem simple enough at first, like craving an ice cream cone, it may actually point to something more significant and it is that larger desire which is held more easily within the fabric of a group of friends, a community, or the world at large.  Humans have long been following their short-sighted desires at the expense of many other living things.  We’ve hunted animals to extinction because we were hungry or wanted their, feathers, furs, tusks or teeth.  If we had asked the question: what do we really want? we might have found a way to attain those things without sacrificing an entire species.  A friend of mine who is a professional mediator, once told me that people often assume that what she does as a mediator is to divide things down the middle and throw a half to each party.  In fact, she told me, usually what each party wants is something different and the division is more about giving everyone exactly what they want.  One party may desire the fruit and the other the peel.
(Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off- Billie Holiday and watch the Fred and Ginger version!)

THEME

This week begins a new two year cycle around healing as Mars (warrior planet of action) and Chiron (planet of wounds and healing) meet in Pisces.  As I was meditating on the things Chiron represents (wounds and healing) I thought about a wound and a healed wound and the path in time between those two points.  I’m sure there is scientific research that corroborates the healing power of visualization.  I don’t have that data on hand (I encourage you to drudge it up if you feel you need proof), but I remember once being asked by a therapist to fast forward one year and imagine how I differently I might feel in the future as opposed to how I felt at the time of our session.  I had my eyes closed and I felt a little like I was in The Wizard of Oz, staring into a crystal ball and getting a very clear picture of what that future felt like.  Years later I can see that path in its entirety, the bridge from one year to the next.  So…the theme this week is endings or resolutions so that we may find the path of healing between those points, between wound and scab and new skin.  I selected a few classic films at random and watched the last few seconds of each.  Some are concluded with words, others only actions, but all fall somewhere on the path of healing, arriving at or towards a resolution.
NOTE: Also most of these are too short to give much of the movie away, but a few may be spoilers, I apologize in advance and I hope it doesn’t dissuade you from watching the entire movie.

TAROTSCOPES for the week of 01/22/15

WHEW AND WELCOME!

If you've made it here, then you've made it through the most difficult part of the week, astrologically speaking.  A New Moon in Aquarius and a Mercury Station to go Retrograde along with the South Node/ Uranus conjunction.  The effects of the South Node/ Uranus conjunction will continue to be felt for a while longer as it will hover within a degree or two of Uranus.  This only happens about once every 19 years and is considered a very big karmic release.  It can also create a certain amount of irritability, and frustration so go easy and when you encounter difficulty or surprises (pleasant or unpleasant) along the way, consider that this might be an opportunity to let go of something you've been clinging to for the last 20 years, like your ego, for example.  This is an opportunity to think about how you can move forward in a new way guided by the things Libra embodies: love, harmony, justice, peace.
Okay, more under the card for the week, the 9 of Cups!

9 OF CUPS

In my excitement over the recent Uranus/ South Node conjunction I completely forgot to discuss the Aquarius New Moon which happened in the wee hours Tuesday Morning just following the conjunction.  This was the first New Moon of 2015 with a focus on creating a new vision for the future.  It is interesting to note that this New Moon also takes place the day before Mercury stations retrograde, also in Aquarius.  This retrograde may be a time to think about the future by examining the past.  Aquarius is the sign associated with friends, groups and associations so this retrograde expect to bump into people from your past which may serve to remind you of the hopes and dreams you still want to manifest or a vision for a future you’ve abandoned which you’d like to revitalize.  There also might be reminders of pasts you don’t want revisit, friends and associations you’ve moved away from in order to grow in a new direction.
I often find that when Mercury goes retrograde, particularly in air, it seems like everyone is talking unusually fast and tripping over their tongues.  The people listening are hearing something completely different than what was said and the person speaking is perhaps pronouncing words or using different words than they normally would to convey a message.  The best tactic may be to move at Mercury’s pace and slow way down.  You might think that slowing down is not an option given the fire under all of our butts with the current trines in fire, but when Mercury goes retrograde, we don’t usually have the luxury of choosing to “burn the candle at both ends.”  Something will slow you down, usually, when we are dealing with an air sign it is miscommunications.
When I was a kid my parents used to read me a series of books called, Mrs. Piggle Wiggle.  Mrs. Piggle Wiggle was a sort of healer who had a trunk full of magical cures willed to her by her pirate husband.  My very favorite story in the series was called, “The Thought-You-Saiders Cure,” which was about a family who was always hearing something other than what was being said.  No matter how many times I heard this story it had me in tears laughing.  I highly recommend reading “The Thought-You-Saiders Cure” to help you navigate the weeks ahead and remind you of the humor in all the hang ups and delays and misunderstandings.
Okay so what about the 9 of Cups?  We’ve seen this card before under other conditions, but what does it mean right now?  The 9 of Cups in most decks depicts a sort of utopia.  It’s the sigh of relief after a difficult journey, it’s the place where you can finally kick your feet up.  What will that look like to you?  What does the end of the struggle you are currently entrenched in look like?  Maybe you are already sitting there and you haven’t given yourself permission to enjoy it?  Mars conjuncts Neptune this week.  Every time Mars meets with another planet a new two year cycle commences.  This time Mars meets Neptune in Pisces, initiating a new two year cycle about dreams and working for your dreams.  The 9 of Cups is often called the wishing card.  Like Aquarius season, the 9 of Cups represents a time for thinking about what you wish for most, to get as fantastical as you want in dreaming up that future.

THEME

As I was walking my neighborhood trying to thinking of an Aquarius appropriate theme that song “Free your mind” popped into my head.  “Free your mind and the rest will follow.”  Prompted by the song (and its very Aquarian lyrics) I started brainstorming all of the phrases and sentences I could that contained the word “free.”  Then I remembered a notebook I had from 2011 when I had committed to doing a page of free writing every day for several months.  On the cover I had written, “A Course in Miracles,”  which was an actual book my Aunt had been reading before she died, but at the time I started the notebook I had no idea what it was about, only that I liked the title and that she had kept it next to her bed.  For the theme this week I decided to pull, at random, from this notebook, since it all came from moments when I had “freed my mind” by writing in a stream of consciousness.  Here is one excerpt from the first page that seems to sum it all up:
“It is hard for me to do this right now.  I want to roam and at the same time I am afraid.  This isn’t high level artist speak just me straight out of my head, maybe passing through my heart.  I want to go away and I want to stay right where I am.  I want to be free and I am afraid to be free.  I want to live where I live and I want to live no where at all.”

The other day I was walking around the lake with my brother, we were both taking breaks.  He was taking a break from studying for a test to get his architectural license and I was taking a break from writing a horoscope for a rock climbing blog.  I was over caffeinated so when my brother asked how I’d been I said dramatically, “This might be the busiest week of my life.”  I went on to list off all of the things I had to do that week and when I’d finished my brother said, “That list, is the weirdest to-do list.”  I paused, for the first time since we’d begun our walk, thinking back over the list and then I laughed.  “You’re right!  I already am!  My dream is to one day be really old and leathery, leaning on the mantle of a fireplace and just laughing about what a full and interesting life I’ve had.” I laughed again.  “I’m living the dream!”
The card this week is the Ace of Cups.  We’ve seen this card before under a different set of astrological weather conditions, but the message is similar.  It’s about falling in love.  It’s about being in love.  It’s about approaching situations from love and with love.  On Martin Luther King Day, this Monday, there will be experiencing several interesting aspects to which the Ace of Cups may be a remedy or at least help any pain associated with transition and change.
The Nodes of Destiny will be moving through the Uranus-Pluto square.  The south node will conjunct Uranus and both the north and south nodes will square Pluto.  According to astrologer, Anne Ortelee this happens only once every 19 years and indicates a release.  You may have noticed that the stars and planets present us with many opportunities to “clean house.”  This is true, but this aspect carries more weight because it is so rare and because it involves the instigators of change, Uranus and Pluto. For these reasons it is likely to be seen on a global scale as well as on an individual one.  With the south node in Aries and the north in Libra we are asked to reflect on war and peace and how we all respond to conflict, the necessity of seeking a peaceful resolution, which isn’t necessarily peaceful in process.  When you see images of non violent protestors, who sat at lunch counters in protest of segregation, being ripped from their seats and kicked and beaten you know that adopting peace and love as a path isn’t without pain.  It is interesting that this is happening on Martin Luther King Day, a time when we reflect back on both the Civil Rights and Vietnam war era, which was also the last time we saw a major Uranus-Pluto aspect.
The other aspect which may be potentially helpful in navigating the difficult aspect indicated above and which will be happening simultaneously is a Mars-Neptune conjunction.  Mars is the planet of action and Neptune is the planet of dreams (to put it simply) so when they come together there is an emphasis on taking actions which support your dream, actions in service to your dream.  Also on this day, Venus opposes Jupiter.  This aspect tends to augment a sense of idealism, which could either soften the difficulty of the Uranus-Pluto aspect or exacerbate those conflicts by contrast.  We shall see!
On an individual level the Ace of Cups asks us to choose love and listen to our hearts.  An old flame once told me as we were breaking up that love is the opposite of fear.  It was a strange time and place to hear this idea repeated and in the moment I’m sure I resented hearing it, but years later it makes perfect sense to me.  Letting go or releasing can be done with love, it can be in service to the love you feel.  What needs to be released to let love in, to let love live?
This week as I was having a peak moment, reveling in the feeling that at least in that instant, I already was living my dream.  I thought, “This is a tough act to follow.  I’m not sure I can love anything more than life.”
(Ace of Cups/ This Little Light of Mine- Sam Cooke)

THE MIX

In honor of Martin Luther King Day on Monday, the mix features Music of the Civil Rights Movement.  I’ve used some of these songs before in other weeks, but they bear repeating, especially now.

THEME

In the last few minutes of Martin Luther King’s speech delivered at the Capital in Montgomery, Alabama following the march from Selma, King lifts spirits on the words, “I know you are asking today, how long will it take?…I come to say to you this afternoon, however difficult the moment, however frustrating the hour, it will not be long…How long? Not long, because a lie can’t live forever…Glory hallelujah, glory hallelujah, His truth is marching on!”  King was a Capricorn and Capricorn is ruled by the planet Saturn, also (historically) known as “Father Time.”  Part of the power and punch of Kings speeches are contained in his sense of timing.  His dramatic pauses give his words time to be absorbed, to truly be felt, even years later as I watch on a computer screen.
Beyond these monumental moments in history, most of us have a much less compelling relationship with time.  On a daily level, humans tend to expend a lot of energy worrying about not having enough time or complaining of possessing too much of it.  For me, growing up it was the later.  But it took me years to realize that waiting was something a person could complain about.  My mother still feels guilty about the amount of time I was kept waiting as a kid, but I did not and do not feel that this time was wasted.  On the contrary, it was these pauses that allowed me to absorb, ponder and make sense of the activity the day contained.  So…what is the theme?  Waiting, minutes of pause or anticipation, which sometimes proved to be more important than what I was actually waiting for.

TAROTSCOPES for the week of 01/07/15

Welcome Navigators!

We now have both feet firmly planted in 2015.  The Fire Trines and the Uranus-Pluto Square continue to hang overhead and may be felt as on earth as a restlessness propelling us towards change.

The watery Full Moon in Cancer over this past weekend may have stirred old wounds, especially since it came so close to the holidays.  Emily Trinkaus of Virgo Magic wrote a great piece about that moon here, but I will just summarize by saying that this moon, emotionally difficult as it may have been, actually helped facilitate a much needed emotional house cleaning, helping us realize our full potential.

Mercury and Venus are traveling within a degree of each other as I write this, a comfortable conjunction for both planets, as they are rather fond of one another.  Mercury has slowed down in preparation to go retrograde at the end of the month.  If this first part of January has felt hectic, rest assured that things will soon move at a more manageable pace, or they may be forced to when Mercury goes retrograde in air (Aquarius).

5 OF PENTACLES

On New Years Day my parents and my brother and I went to go see “Selma,” a movie about the historic march from Selma to Montgomery and the surrounding events.  I don’t want to say too much about the movie right now because I know a lot of people haven’t seen it yet, but I hope you all do.  I hope this is just one of many reminders we receive about the civil rights movement and that period in our nations history as it feels particularly important and pertinent at this moment in time.  In an interview on CBS This Morning with Oprah and David Oyelowo (the actor who plays Martin Luther King Jr. in “Selma”), Oyelowo says, “The parallels between Selma and Ferguson are indisputable.  The way I look at it, Ferguson felt like a Black problem, once we went into Eric Garner it became an American problem.  You have the same thing with Selma.  The denial of voting rights was a Black problem and the minute we had Bloody Sunday, it became an American problem.”
We begin the year in Capricorn, as we do every year.  This year we are also experiencing a tight Uranus-Pluto square with Pluto in the sign of Capricorn.  As I’ve said before in other posts, this is a generational aspect with a focus on changing structure and power.  Capricorns are the mountain climbers of the zodiac.  They are known for being very goal oriented.  They are frequently the ones to ask, “Where are we going?”  Now is the perfect time to ask this question with Saturn in Sagittarius, the sign that asks us to create our vision for the future.  The shadow side of Capricorn carries a propensity to worry.  I don’t mean to pick on my Capricorn family and friends (I’m fortunate to have many), but I’ve noticed several of them have a knack for concocting the most wild worst case scenarios I’ve ever heard.  There may be a great many “what ifs” that stand between a Capricorn and their goal.  The card for the week, the 5 of Pentacles suggests all the worry and the “what ifs” and the worst case scenarios.  Worry is energy, which is why when you worry you can feel exhausted even if you haven’t physically exerted yourself.  The mental exhaustion is real.  The 5 of Pentacles asks us to convert the worry energy back into energy and then funnel it in another direction, towards our vision of the future, towards our goal.
Watching “Selma” I was also reminded of Martin Luther King’s last speech delivered at Mason Temple in Tennessee which has been named with a line from the speech, “I’ve Been To The Mountaintop.”  He stirs the audience saying, “Well I don’t know what will happen now.  We’ve got some difficult days ahead, but it really doesn’t matter to me now because I’ve been to the mountain top.  Like anybody I would like to live a long life.  Longevity has its place, but I’m not concerned about that now.  I just want to do God’s will and he’s allowed me to go up to the mountain and I’ve looked over and I’ve seen the promise land.  I may not get there with you.  But I want you to know tonight that we as a people will get to the promise land.  So I’m happy tonight, I’m not worried about anything, I’m not fearing any man.  Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the lord!”  He staggers stiffly away from the podium, perhaps filled with emotion or maybe just heavy with exhaustion, and into the arms of a friend waiting in the wings.
On a walk the other day I was thinking about nostalgia and the tendency to live in the past.  Incidentally, Capricorn is also the sign that represents history and antiques, of things passed down generation to generation.  It can be so comfortable living in ones fondest memories that it becomes difficult to move on.  This comfort is what the Full Moon in Cancer over the weekend touched on and asked us to examine as it opposed both the Sun and Pluto in Capricorn.  Capricorn is an earth sign and so worries often arise from an intense focus on earthly or tangible things.  Our past has been experienced, we have moved through it with our bodies, the future has no earthly form.  I thought of the intangibility of the future and the subsequent anxiety and worry that can inspire.  We don’t know if it will ever exist and so the past is an easier place to call home.  In fact, I thought, there is no where to live except in the past if we don’t stand in the present and envision the future.
(I’ve Been To The Mountaintop- Martin Luther King Jr.)

THEME

With several family members and a few friends celebrating their Capricorn birthdays I’ve been thinking a lot about the sign.  Their symbol is the goat and they are the mountain climbers of the zodiac.  So for the theme this week, I decided to climb a “mountain” (actually to the top of a large hill in my neighborhood) and record my observations along the way as they pertained to each sign and card.  Here’s a bonus song for the occasion.

TAROTSCOPES for the week of 01/01/15

WELCOME TRAVELERS!

Happy New Year!  We have arrived in 2015, a new calendar year stretches out in front of us.  Besides what I've included below under the card for the week, the Queens of Pentacle, there will be a full moon in Cancer on Saturday the 3rd.  Typically full moons are good for releasing conflict or overcoming obstacles.  This is the first full moon of 2015 and in Cancer much of the focus is on releasing old habits which may have at one time brought you comfort but which now hold you back from the future you want to build.  It is our future vision that Saturn is pushing us to create and the Full Moon in Cancer will be helpful in clearing obstructions to those goals.

QUEENS OF PENTACLE

Sometimes before I start writing I sharpen pencils.  Even though I do most of my Tarotscopes writing on the computer, it is helpful to ground myself with some tangible and meditative activity before I trot off into my thoughts.  Also included in my preparation are peculiar snack cravings I must satisfy (lately it is shredded coconut).  Both Capricorn and Pentacles are associated with the element of earth.  The Queen of Pentacles or the Queens of Pentacle, as Amy Von Harrington has named this card in her deck, seems to be a nod to the Capricorn section of the sky the Sun, Mercury and Venus are currently traversing.  The question raised by this card and the astrology this week is, what do you need to support your work in the world?  The answer is not as simple as the question itself would suggest.  While food, clothing and shelter are basic necessities, they are not the list in its entirety.  Each person’s needs may differ from one to the next and each person’s needs may also change over time.  These needs may be as changeable as an ocean and water is the other element associated with this card.  Capricorns are known for their stability and steadfastness, but these strengths can quickly pen them in if they do not remain flexible enough to adjust their course when intuition or circumstance demands it.
As we sit at the top of 2015, now is the time to set your sights on what you want to build in the future, but with the understanding that what you build must also be able accommodate waves of change.
(What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve- The Orioles)

THEME

The theme this week is Homonyms, words that sound the same, but have different meanings and often spellings.  This sprang to mind because this weekend Mercury (planet of communication) moves from Capricorn to Aquarius.  Venus is also making this move this week, further emphasizing the transition from earth to air, from concrete to amorphous.  In Capricorn words are often used directly, with no hidden meaning or agenda.  In Aquarius, the use of words is more inventive.  In her speech to the anthropology department at Berkeley Ursula K. Le Guin says of her father, the founder of the department, “If he couldn’t find the right words, he wouldn’t use the wrong ones.”  In Capricorn there is an emphasis on saying what you mean and meaning what you say.  If there is no word to convey your meaning then perhaps you won’t “use the wrong ones.”  In Aquarius, this solution may not be satisfactory.  Aquarius says, “if there are no words, I will invent new ones” or use words in unusual ways which may convey my meaning more accurately.  So here we go, words with multiple meanings, both of which, when combined with your card and astrology for the week, make some sort of sense or cents or scents.

TAROTSCOPES for the week of 12/25/14

WELCOME NAVIGATORS!

Merry Christmas and Happy Kwanzaa! Much of the to-do among the planets and stars this week is focused around Saturn's switch from Scorpio to Sagittarius.  The Uranus-Pluto square, which continues to give weight to radical changes both personally and politically, was also caught in this conversation since Saturn is the traditional ruler of Capricorn and Capricorn is the sign through which Pluto is currently traversing.  To top it off we may still be feeling the effects of Uranus' station, though the planet is now moving direct.  Take care of your health and go easy this week as we make our way towards the New Year.  I discuss many of these shifts in more detail under the card for the week, the 9 of Swords.

9 OF SWORDS

Years ago, when my parents were living in Indonesia, my mom and I got up with flashlights before dawn to watch the sun come up over the Borobudur, a Buddhist Temple in Central Java.  We were part of a small tour group, but we broke off from the crowd almost as soon as the sun tapped the temple.  My mom pointed out one image carved in stone of Buddha, with his palm raised, “Do you know what that means?”  “What, what means?” I asked.  “That gesture.”  I shook my head. “It means, be not afraid.”  It wasn’t the statue or the gesture, but just the way my mother seemed to have absorbed the message, which stood out to me.  She reflected the posture, holding up her hand as the words “Be not afraid,” sailed on a breath.  It seemed that any fears she’d pocketed also went out on that breath.
The 9 of Swords really points to fear itself.  It is a potential nightmare from which you must figure out how to wake yourself.  This is something I’ve observed in myself and others close to me.  You can turn the light on, you can leave the light on, but until you dismantle the monster in your mind you may always be afraid of the dark.  It’s a kind of code to be cracked.  Watching my mother in that moment on top of the Borobudur, I knew that through this gesture and this message she had found a way of cracking at least some part of that code within herself.
It was December 1st, 1955 when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus in Alabama.  Every December, consciously or unconsciously, I find myself thinking about her strength.  When I was a kid I used to have nightmares that I was running from something or someone and I would get tired and throw myself on the ground and cover my head with my hands, as I’d been taught to do during tornado drills.  It had never occurred to me, at the time, that not moving could be an act of bravery.  When Rosa Parks was asked about the events leading to her arrest in Montgomery she said, “When that white driver stepped back toward us, when he waved his hand and ordered us up and out of our seats, I felt a determination cover my body like a quilt on a winter night."  As Saturn shifts into Sagittarius, from Scorpio there is an emphasis on standing (or sitting as the case may be) up for what you believe, even if you aren’t sure of the outcome.
We are also still working with the energy of the Uranus-Pluto square which further emphasizes the impact one individual can make on an entire system.  Rosa Parks was not the first person to take action against segregation on public transportation, others before her had weakened the argument in support of it and her bravery added another powerful blow.  We may continue to see Parks’ sentiments reflected in the current political climate.  The storms are not likely to subside until major changes are made.  Parks once said, “The only tired I was, was tired of giving in.”

THEME

“It has been an ache and a joy both to look over this big shoulder of mine at all my yesterdays.”
-Ethel Waters

As I write this, Saturn is moving into Sagittarius.  This is known as an Ingress, when a planet changes signs.  Oddly, I’m literally sitting at a similar juncture.  I’m at my parents house in Tucson, which is relatively new to all of us, but it is now home to memories, many of which have been in storage since I was fifteen.  As I poke around the rooms there are objects I recognize from the various places my parents have lived and a few objects that held some place in my childhood.  Some of these memories have never lived under the same roof before, even in my mind they have been separated by oceans.  I find myself trying to remember where a picture hung when it was in Brazil or Indonesia.  This week as we come up from the underworld of Scorpio and into the bright light of Sagittarius there is an effort to put in the context of our vision for the future, all the psychological knowledge we may have gained or touched on when Saturn was in Scorpio.  As Saturn moves into Sagittarius, we are now being asked to look towards the horizon while not leaving behind the understanding we may have reached when Saturn was in Scorpio of who we are at the root.  Because I have the rare opportunity (rare for me) of being able to access some of my childhood writings, I decided to look back over my shoulder this week, before we all gallop into a New Year.

TAROTSCOPES for the week of 12/17/14

WELCOME WANDERERS OF THE ASTRAL PLAIN!

Happy Solstice!  Happy Hanukkah!  There are plenty of astrological aspects this week to keep you wondering if it is this or that contributing to flurries of feeling or emotional outbursts.  Venus and Mercury are both out of bounds (not following the guidelines set by the sun) which may, among other things, contribute to people saying things they wouldn’t normally say and buying things they wouldn’t normally buy.  In other words, these aspects are not the most conducive to holiday shopping, because you might end up getting an unusual gift for someone and they may have no qualms about telling you exactly what they think of it.  So if you are buying gifts for Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Christmas or a birthday proceed with caution and know that your tastes as well as everyone else’s may tend towards the unusual, which for some could work out quite favorably.
Mercury and Venus are now in Capricorn which does tend to make both planets more “law” abiding and productive.  But again, both are out of bounds so they may be more interested in subverting rules than following them.
Sunday is a New Moon in Capricorn.  Time to make your New Moon Wishes, more than one and no more than ten!  Consider putting some of your wishes to work on the current events.  In general the Capricorn New Moon supports making structural changes, starting new creative projects, or a new job and attracting abundance.
The other aspects of note this week I discuss in more detail under the card for the week, the King of Cups.

KING OF CUPS

Just as I sat down to write this, I took a bite of something sweet.  The heat is on in my apartment and I’m wearing my warmest sweater which I inherited from a good friend.  This is one experience of the King of Cups.  There is a sense of fluid contentment.  This is a comfort that is created, not from feeling that everything has it’s place or is in perfect order, but from a sense of trust in one’s ability to weather whatever storms may arise and enjoying whatever moments of comfort coalesce.
There may be more than one storm this week as the Grand Fire Trine continues and as we move away from the 6th of 7 exact squares between Uranus and Pluto.  Next week Saturn finally moves into Sagittarius!  This is an exciting moment shifting the current conversation from a focus on intimacy, sexuality, the exploration of our shadow side, psychological transformation and healing, among other things, to a conversation centering around integrity, intuition, philosophy, higher learning, meaning, truth and long term goals.  Saturn in Sagittarius tends to steer us towards those relationships, opportunities, jobs, choices that serve some higher goal or purpose, that serve the greater good.  My grandparents met in medical school over a partial gastrectomy.  I always wondered if there wasn’t some higher purpose in their meeting as they always seemed to be in exactly the right place at the right time to assist in a crisis or bring comfort to someone who was sick or dying.
The King of Cups combines the elements of water and fire which is quite appropriate as Saturn navigates the stretch between water and fire.  The ability to navigate change from an intuitive place is emphasized.  If you have been ignoring your intuition then you may experience this week as slightly uncomfortable or difficult.  Let the King of Cups be your guide.  The King of Cups’ confidence does not come from having all the answers, but from asking questions.  He is at peace with uncertainty and ambiguity.  If I were to pick an actual person to embody this archetype I think it might be Oprah.  Oprah’s wisdom feels more flexible than others who could claim to occupy a similar societal role.  Oprah has made it her job to ask questions.  And one answer may be much less important than all the voices one question can raise.

THEME

One of my favorite lesser known celestial bodies is a minor planet called Chariklo, discovered in 1997.  Where Chariklo appears in a persons astrology chart indicates an intuitive wisdom, where a person must “close their eyes to see.”  Right now Chariklo is in Sagittarius and is part of the current Grand Trine in fire.  Sandwiched between Mercury and the Sun, by degree, this may indicate the necessity of turning turning down the volume on ones ego (the Sun) in order to receive important messages (Mercury) as facilitated or carried by Chariklo.  It is interesting that Chariklo is prominently placed this week as we approach Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year, a time when the whole world closes its eyes a little bit longer than usual.  To reflect this moment, I decided to make note of what I saw when I closed my eyes after pulling each of your cards for the week.  What follows are the result of I weaving the card, the astrology for the week and the spontaneous images behind my eyelids.
